before and after {Stefanie}

I wanted to find a photo that I'd really messed up, and see what I could do with it. I still have not downloaded Aperture 2, so I just used the iPhoto application that comes standard on Macs.

Here is the before. We were at the zoo and I had moved from taking pics in the shade to the sun and snapped a few before I realized how overexposed they were. But I love her expression in this one so I figured I'd mess with it a bit.

meibefore
Nikon d90
Manual
50mm focal length
2.8 aperture
1/640 shutter speed

Here is the after. I increased the saturation and temperature to warm up her face a bit. I downed the brightness and contrast to help with the shadows. I blurred the edges, cropped it and upped the sharpness, and that's it! I kinda liked the blown out quality of it, so I didn't want to darken it too much.

I would love any constructive criticism... and if anyone has and uses Aperture 2, I'd love your opinion on it :)

That, to me, is one of the best parts of post-processing. Too many times, I get wrapped up in the moment and forget to make adjustments...then end up with a photo I would have loved. I liked your approach for this month's theme, and you made an awesome difference in this photo!

Awesome, Stef! You edited perfectly - the crop is GREAT, I love how you warmed and softened the photo up without losing that sunlit feel! Nicely done!!!

Hey!
I am impressed!! I never really attempt to use IPhoto to post edit... Now I will!!!!!! Like Rebecca said, you did a great job of saving the sunlit highlights where they should be in this pic!!! Yay!

I am like you in that this is such a sweet capture of her....It is hard to shoot when it is sunny but sometimes you just can't help it when you are out with your children! I do this all the time. I am sure A2 has a burn setting and you can actually go and just burn the areas on her face and dress. I alo like her hand on the rocks which add such texture.

P.S. Stefanie I was working on some photos taken in bright sunlight just a few days ago, and I have to say, you did a FABULOUS job with this... I have a new appreciation for how you rescued this photo!! It's hard to post process pics with this type of lighting and still have them feel natural. Wonderful job. :)
